Managing Partner, Alteria Capital
Ajay Hattangdi is Managing Partner and Co-founder of Alteria Capital Advisors LLP, investment advisor to a $140mn India-focused Venture Debt Fund. He has been working with the Indian technology industry for over 20 years and with startups and venture capital for over 15 years. Ajay was an early pioneer in starting the venture debt industry in India when he started the country’s first venture lending program while at Citibank in 2005. Mr. Hattangdi subsequently raised $50mn from Silicon Valley Bank to start the first NBFC to provide venture debt to Indian startups in 2007. SVB India Finance was re-branded InnoVen Capital India following a buyout of the business by Temasek Holdings and UOB Group in 2015.
Following the buyout, Mr. Hattangdi assumed executive responsibility for setting the strategy and driving InnoVen Capital Group’s international expansion in addition to leading as CEO of the India business. He played a key role in introducing venture debt in other markets in Asia having set the strategy for, built out, and supervised InnoVen’s operations across India, SE Asia and China. He was a member of InnoVen Group’s Global Deal Committee in addition to serving on the Boards of the Group’s operating companies prior to his exit in July 2017 to co-found Alteria Capital.
Mr. Hattangdi was recognized by Fintech Asia as among ‘Top 100 Leaders shaping finance across the Asian region’ in 2016, and listed among ‘The 40 Who Matter in the Indian Start-up Ecosystem’ by HT Media’s MINT business newspaper in December 2016. He was awarded the Game Changer Award by Finance Monthly magazine while InnoVen was awarded Asia’s Best Venture Lending Firm under his leadership in 2017.
Prior to starting SVB’s India business, Mr. Hattangdi served at Citibank India for over 12 years in a number of senior roles within the Corporate & Investment Banking Group including a two-year stint as India Strategy Head for the corporate & investment bank concurrently with his role of starting the venture debt business group in 2005. He worked as an Associate at CRISIL and Miranda Tools Ltd prior to doing his MBA.
Mr. Hattangdi serves on the Advisory Board of Mumbai Angels. He is a regular speaker on angel and venture capital activities. In 1998, Mr. Hattangdi co-founded PRAJA Foundation (www.praja.org), a voluntary Mumbai-based non-profit organization committed to re-establishing accountability and transparency in public governance. Mr. Hattangdi holds an MBA from State University of New York in Buffalo and an M.Com from Mumbai University. He enjoys squash, reading, a staple diet of food shows, and discovering new vacation destinations with his wife and teenage twins.
