Soumitra Dasgupta is an Indian Forest Service Officer of 1989 batch, West Bengal Cadre. He has extensive experience for more than 34 years of field work in the state of West Bengal and policy level work at Government of India, in forest and wildlife management. Held very senior post of Inspector General and Additional Director General of Forest in the Ministry of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change, Govt. of India. Functioned as country head of Wildlife being the Director Wildlife Preservation of India and also as the Ex-Officio Director Wildlife Crime Control Bureau of India. He held the position of the CITES Management Authority of India, Whaling Commissioner of India and was the Focal point of India for UN Conventions like Convention on Migratory Species and World Heritage Convention. He played key role in developing India’s- Ecotourism guideline, Human – latest wildlife conflict mitigation guideline, Exotic species import guideline, amendment of the wildlife protection Act, Marine conservation strategy, Wildlife action plan of India. He superannuated from active Government service, as Principal Chief Conservator of Forest and Head of Forest Force of West Bengal. After superannuation from the service, Shri Dasgupta presently, is mentoring the WWF, advising the UNDP on MOEFCC Project, and working in the interim secretariat of International Big Cat Alliance and also member of Regional Empowered Committee of the MOEFCC.
